ABOUT

Meet Hupstein

Hupstein Eng is a Wellington-based guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and educator whose work spans jazz, fusion, and indie rock. Raised in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, he discovered his love of performing at a young age, playing his first solo in front of his local ukulele group. Since then, music has remained at the centre of his life, leading him to become an active performer across Wellington's vibrant music scene.

Hupstein's main project is Studio4, a four-piece indie rock band formed with his closest mates from high school. The group has built a strong local following through regular performances around Wellington and is currently working on their debut EP, scheduled for release in early 2027.

Alongside his work in contemporary music, Hupstein is completing a minor in Jazz Performance at the New Zealand School of Music. There he has developed a deep appreciation for jazz and improvisation, leading to the formation of CHOPS, a quartet that performs everything from straight-ahead swing to modern fusion. The ensemble also appears as the Hupstein Eng Trio and Quartet, featuring classic vocal jazz repertoire.

As a session musician, Hupstein regularly performs with a diverse range of artists and ensembles throughout Wellington and has contributed to numerous live performances and recordings. He is available for session work, live performances, teaching, and creative collaborations.

Beyond performing, Hupstein is a passionate music educator, teaching guitar, voice, and music theory to students of all ages. He believes music has the power to bring people together and is committed to helping others develop confidence, creativity, and a lifelong enjoyment of music.
